Entering the world - OPEN
The screaming floating across the water was starting to die down, slowly, and a voice above and behind him was remarking on it; but Jack Phillips found he didn't care much. He was finding it hard to care about much of anything, really. He'd lost the feeling in his feet ages ago, and his breath was freezing on his face, and his hands felt like blocks of stone where they were--somehow--still clinging to the side of the overturned collapsible, but none of that seemed to matter. The one thing that did matter, what his mind kept repeating in a silent monotone, was the fact that help was on its way. He knew that. He was certain of it. He'd told them to come. He could only hope there were still people alive to benefit from it when it arrived.

He certainly wasn't.

He'd done his duty, he'd remained at his post, and now he was going to die because of it. The notion didn't frighten him as much as he thought it would have. Perhaps it was because he was so cold.

He hoped his parents would be proud of him.

With a sigh, he closed his eyes, and—

--his back hit something, hard, and there was a blinding light in his eyes and a roaring like the thundering of a thousand trains--

--he was surrounded by grass--grass?--and the wind was howling in his ears--

--something smelled like burning--

--was this what it was like to die?--

--with a final jolt, he was face-down with water running up his nose. His teeth were chattering, he was soaking wet, sound and smell and touch were assaulting him from all sides, and he was not in the middle of the North Atlantic anymore.

Hiro and Ando are walking along the banks of the bay, lost in thought. Hiro still isn't sure of why he's staying in New York except that his father hasn't told him to come home. His sister is still in Tokyo.

He looks down just in tie to see a man staggering from the Hudson. Without thinking, he pulls Ando's sleeve and runs towards him.

"Are you ok?" he yells as they sprint up.
Jack Phillipskeyofmgy on June 21st, 2007 04:35 am (UTC)
Jack was blundering ahead without really seeing where he was going; he was badly disoriented, in shock, and hypothermic from his long spell in the ocean. His knees gave out just as he heard a heavily-accented voice calling to him. "W-Where a-a-am I?" he chattered, blinking rapidly and trying to take in his surroundings.

"You are in New York City," Hiro tells him. "Did you fall into the bay? Are you hurt?"

Ando runs back towards the street, trying to wave down a cab.
Jack Phillipskeyofmgy on June 21st, 2007 05:30 am (UTC)
"I--but--" He was in a city, impossibly so, but it bore no resemblance to the New York Jack knew. His arms and legs were starting to prickle painfully, and his heart was racing. "How is this p-possible?" he pleaded. "H-Have I d-d-died?"
powered_otakupowered_otaku on June 21st, 2007 06:00 am (UTC)
Hiro looks alarmed for a moment. "No, no, you are alive." He reaches for Jack to help him to his feet. "Are you hurt?"

Ando calls from the street that he's got a cab. "Cab is waiting. We take you where you need."
Jack Phillipskeyofmgy on June 21st, 2007 07:22 am (UTC)
Jack managed to stand and remain on his feet, though Hiro ended up having to support most of his weight. He was beginning to shake uncontrollably again. "I--I have hypother-thermia, I know it," he replied, coughing and looking wildly around for a moment. Everything and everyone looked strange. And he still wasn't clinging to a lifeboat in the middle of the ocean anymore.
powered_otakupowered_otaku on June 21st, 2007 01:33 pm (UTC)
Hiro begins walking Jack to the waiting cab. When Ando sees them, he comes over and gets on Jack's other side. They get to the cab and Ando climbs in. Between them, they manage to get him into the cab.

"Take us to the nearest hospital," Ando tells the cab driver.

The cab swerves into traffic, barely missing 3 cars who honk angrily at it. Hiro looks at him, sees he's shivering. Pulling off his thin jacket, he puts it around Jack's shoulders. It isn't much, but at least it's something.

"Ah geez! He smells like a sewer!" the cabbie groans.

"He fell in the water," Hiro explains as the cab speeds on, cutting off a couple more cars.
Jack Phillipskeyofmgy on June 21st, 2007 01:51 pm (UTC)
Jack was fairly certain he'd never been more terrified in his life. Keeping his post on a sinking ship, he'd handled very well. Holding on to an overturned lifeboat and waiting to die--he'd cast that lot and made his peace with it. Having a whirlwind nightmare that had landed him in a wholly unfamiliar place and put him in an out-of-control motorcar with two strangers who barely spoke English as he understood it?

Freezing to death might have been preferable.

But still--"Th-thank you," he chattered to Hiro and Ando both.
powered_otakupowered_otaku on June 21st, 2007 02:17 pm (UTC)
"Are you injured?" Ando asks as Hiro glares a bit at the driver for being so rude.
Jack Phillipskeyofmgy on June 21st, 2007 02:24 pm (UTC)
"I--I was freezing to-to d-d-death," he managed in response, knees knocking together in the confined space of the back seat.
powered_otakupowered_otaku on June 21st, 2007 02:36 pm (UTC)
"Did you fall off a boat?" The cab pulls into the ambulance stand at the hospital.

"That'll be $9.50."

Hiro hands him a $20 and tells him to keep the change. He climbs out, then helps Ando help Jack out of the cab. As they slowly walk towards the ER, 2 nurses see them and help them get Jack into the building.

"What happened?" the male nurse asks Hiro.

"I think he fell off a boat. He was in Hudson Bay."

"He looks hypothermic," the other says. "Sir? What's your name?"
Jack Phillipskeyofmgy on June 22nd, 2007 01:40 pm (UTC)
"Jack Phillips," he replied, trying very hard to keep his shivering in check. As for everything else... it seemed to be best if he put his mind on autopilot. At least he was out of the runaway motorcar.
powered_otakupowered_otaku on June 22nd, 2007 02:20 pm (UTC)
"Mr. Phillips, I'm going to help you out of those wet things and we'll take your temperature," the male nurse tells him. "I'm John, so if you'll come with me." He starts to lead Jack towards one of the curtained areas. The female nurse begins to ask Hiro and Ando questions.

Before the curtain closes, Hiro calls, "We will wait for you."

Then John is helping him out of his clothes and getting him into scrubs. When he's dressed, John gets him onto the movable bed. "Sorry about this, man, but we have to get a core temperature."

He begins to roll Jack onto his hip while he holds a rectal thermometer.
Jack Phillipskeyofmgy on June 22nd, 2007 04:00 pm (UTC)
He'd never seen or been anywhere like this, and the confused panic stifling his breathing reached its breaking point. He took one look at the thermometer--

--and suddenly found himself outside the curtained area on the floor, curled in the fetal position and hyperventilating, with no recollection of having jumped up and run for his life.
powered_otakupowered_otaku on June 22nd, 2007 08:10 pm (UTC)
Hiro and Ando run up to where he's fled, but stop just short of getting too close.

"Jack? Can you hear me?" Hiro squats down so that Jack can look him in the eye.

"What did you do?" Ando asks the nurse angrily.
Jack Phillipskeyofmgy on June 22nd, 2007 09:14 pm (UTC)
Jack was looking around in bewilderment. "Yes, yes," he stammered. "But what did I just do? What have I been doing? I k-k-keep appearing in places I ought not be..."
powered_otakupowered_otaku on June 22nd, 2007 10:03 pm (UTC)
Hiro's eyes widen. "You...disappear? You in one place, then suddenly in another?"

OOC: Is he a teleporter? This'll make a difference in the nurse's reaction.
Jack Phillipskeyofmgy on June 22nd, 2007 10:24 pm (UTC)
Suddenly seized with an overpowering joy that someone might understand what had just happened to him--indeed, been happening--Jack tried to grab Hiro by the shoulders, but he was still shivering badly and his hands wouldn't do want he wanted. "Yes, that must be it, that must be how I came to be here from the ocean, but I don't understand..."

OOC: Pretty much. He jumps through time and/or space when there's something he perceives as a threat to his safety.
powered_otakupowered_otaku on June 22nd, 2007 10:29 pm (UTC)
Hiro takes his hands to try and stop them from shaking. "I...have same ability."

Ando is currently giving the nurse a piece of his mind for frightening the poor man.
Jack Phillipskeyofmgy on June 22nd, 2007 11:02 pm (UTC)
If it were possible, Jack's eyes both narrowed and widened at the same time. "Y-You do? You travel pl-places without meaning t-t-to?"
powered_otakupowered_otaku on June 23rd, 2007 12:46 am (UTC)
"Actually, I can go where I want to. Sometimes I do not end up in right place, but most times I go where I want to go."
Jack Phillipskeyofmgy on June 23rd, 2007 01:18 am (UTC)
"How is that p-possible?" Jack gasped, trying to climb to his feet.
powered_otakupowered_otaku on June 23rd, 2007 02:05 am (UTC)
"It is my ability. The more I use it, the better I get. You are still unwell. Let the nurse help. I will be with you."

The nurse looks over from Ando.

"Mr. Phillips. We really do need to take your temperature. You may have hypothermia and that's nothing to fool around with." He offers Jack a hand up.
Jack Phillipskeyofmgy on June 23rd, 2007 02:10 am (UTC)
Jack was completely baffled by the way Hiro was talking as if jumping from the North Atlantic to New York City was a completely normal thing to do, but he let the nurse pull him to his feet. "W-With that... thing?" he bleated.
powered_otakupowered_otaku on June 23rd, 2007 08:56 am (UTC)
The man shrugs, looking apologetic. "I'd just use a digital one, but in cases of possible hypothermia, we have to get as accurate a reading as possible."
Jack Phillipskeyofmgy on June 23rd, 2007 06:03 pm (UTC)
He had no clue what 'digital' meant, but there was always a chance it could turn out to be worse than the thing the man had brandished at him earlier. And anyway he was too cold and pain-wracked to put up much of a fight. "I-I unders-stand," he replied faintly.
powered_otakupowered_otaku on June 24th, 2007 02:45 am (UTC)
The nurse starts to object when Hiro comes into the curtained area with him, but desists in the hopes that it'll calm Jack down.

"You may be here for a reason," Hiro says, as the nurse gets Jack back on the bed and lets him lie down. He rolls Jack onto his hip and, making sure that Hiro is keeping Jack distracted, pulls the scrubpants off his hip and sticks the thermometer in.
Jack Phillipskeyofmgy on June 26th, 2007 06:58 pm (UTC)
Dying would honestly have been preferable, Jack decided. "Wh-What do you mean?" he asked Hiro. "This w-was no accident?"
powered_otakupowered_otaku on June 26th, 2007 10:27 pm (UTC)
"Perhaps it is your destiny to be here," Hiro says quietly as the nurse waits for the thermometer. After a couple of minutes he pulls it back out.

"Mr. Phillips, your core temperature is low. The doctor will be in shortly to tell you what needs to be done, but I'll get a blanket and some warm saline packs."

He heads out, then comes back with some packs. Rolling Jack onto his back, he puts the packs around Jack's body, then covers him with the blanket. Immediately, Jack feels warmer.
